I've heard it all before “you do realize wrestling is fake”
I may not have a diploma or work for NASA, I couldn't tell you how to repair a car, or run a nation. But you better believe I'll always out knowledge you in wrestling history. Pick a year and I'll tell you every winner and champion. Moving from school to school was never easy being the “new kid” at times, being a wrestling fan sure made it easier, finding friends who also watched it. Nothing was more fun than going to school after watching wrestling and discussing what we saw the night before.
Even in big life changes like moving from your childhood home, leaving behind your school and friends, wrestling was that one constant it was constantly there on the good days and bad. Just getting to lose yourself and get entangled in the stories and personalities. Even for a few hours could change everything.
When I was young I'd play with my toy wrestlers and come up with storylines, and write shows down on paper, my figure company I suppose you'd say. I could care less about the new hot toys that came out that year. I was too involved in writing down who was going to win the World title and storylines for my figures. In many respects, wrestling helped me learn how to write.
I may not be able to tell you who won the world series, or the score in that hockey game. I couldn't tell you a single basketball team.. Or many unforgettable moments in any sport. However, I can tell you about the night Hulk Hogan slammed Andre the giant or the night Ric Flair retired. Or when two legends in their 50s went out there and put on the greatest match in WrestleMania history Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker proved that age didn't slow them down.
So this Sunday I'll be watching Wrestlemania 37, over the years I've seen, Hulkamania run wild, a macho man, and an Ultimate warrior, I've seen giants, bonzai drops, dead men, rising from the grave, I've seen rock become Dwayne who's now Hollywood fame, I've seen the best there is, Austin 3:16, seen a streak end at 21-1. I've seen 93,173 fans attend wrestlemaina 3 in 1987, seen no fans attend wrestlemaina 36 in 2020. Ive seen an evolution moment that main evented wrestlemaina 35. Most of all, I've seen moments that stick with me forever from Hogan slamming the giant, to the Undertakers last ride, dream matches and even unplanned moments play out on live tv. through the years I've cheered whoooo and booed,
The only thing I've never seen, is why some can't see, why wouldn't I be a wrestling fan?
